How Macy's Permanent Jewellery Creates Lasting Memories

No outfit is complete without your favourite piece of jewellery.

Whether it’s a necklace from your partner, a charm bracelet or your engagement ring, every trinket tells a tale.

Now, with the rise of permanent jewellery, you can keep a symbol of an important friendship, life event or relationship close every day.

I recently caught up with Macy, the Founder of Macy’s Permanent Jewellery, to discover the journey of her business, how she creates her gorgeous pieces and the importance of supporting independent businesses!

When did Macy’s Permanent Jewellery begin?

Macy’s Permanent Jewellery began this year (2025).

My first official event was on the 12th of July, although I’d spent a few months prior setting up, making sure everything was at the standard I wanted it to be — as well as practising on very willing friends and family.

What inspired you to start your business/creating jewellery?

The desire to have my own business came first.

After leaving my well-paid full-time job on a random Thursday with no plan, I realised that working for someone else wasn’t what I wanted and wasn’t making me happy — in fact, quite the opposite. It wasn’t moving me in the direction of my goals either; it was outright holding me back. I’d been at that job for around three and a half years before I left, and I didn’t have the job security or sense of reward that I needed.

At the beginning of the year, I’d also lost two of my lovely dogs after years of happy memories together. I think that really influenced my mindset and made me realise I didn’t want to just live to work anymore.

I used to take my Springer Spaniel, Purdey, to work with me every day, so it was important to me that I didn’t end up in a job where I couldn’t see her or spend time with her.

Having my own business gives me the flexibility to work fewer hours when I need to and to do much of the ‘behind the scenes’ work from home — with Purdey sat beside me, of course, ‘helping’ wherever she can.

I think I’d always known from a young age that I wanted to do something for myself, but there’s such a stigma around starting your own business, especially as a young woman. I decided that only answering to myself — choosing my own working hours, projects, and direction — was what I needed to build the life and future I wanted.

It took me a while to decide what to do, but when permanent jewellery came to mind, it seemed like the obvious choice.

I didn’t want to do something generic or just ‘buying and selling’. I wanted something with personality — something my customers could connect with and get excited about too. It also helped that I love wearing jewellery but am too forgetful to take it on and off, so (slightly selfishly) I make sure to give myself an endless supply of gorgeous pieces — obviously for research and advertising purposes!

What was your biggest challenge when starting (and how did you overcome this)?

My biggest challenge was understanding where to start and how to do literally everything.

Permanent jewellery isn’t a common trade, and there weren’t many local people I could turn to for help.

I wanted to make sure I did it properly, so it took a lot of time to find trustworthy courses and mentors to guide me in this new journey.

Talk us through the process of creating a piece of permanent jewellery!

To create a piece of permanent jewellery, the customer first chooses their preferred metal (sterling silver, rose gold filled, or gold filled), their favourite chain style, and where they’d like it attached — whether that’s a bracelet, anklet, necklace, or even a ring.

They can also choose to add a charm or connector, with many options available — including genuine gemstones, real pearls, handmade designs, and birthstones.

I then custom fit the chain, add any charms or connectors, and check with the client to ensure the fit is perfect.

Once they’re happy, I cut the chain to size and weld it in place — creating a perfect, personalised, and permanent piece.

What do you love most about the process?

That’s a tough one!

I absolutely love meeting my customers and chatting with them, learning why they’re having their permanent piece made and what it represents. Often, it’s something deeply meaningful — whether it’s to honour a loved one or to share a bond through matching pieces. It’s so lovely to be part of that experience.

I also love seeing the combinations people choose. It’s so refreshing to see the different styles and how excited they get when designing something that will stay with them forever.

What makes your business unique?

I think there are several things that make my business unique, and that’s something I’ve been very intentional about from the start.

The biggest difference is probably my handmade options — I’ve taken the time to learn and perfect the craft of creating handmade charms, connectors, and chains, offering clients something completely bespoke.

I also offer rose gold-filled options across the board, as I noticed a real lack of this within the industry.

I make a point of using only premium materials — sterling silver, gold filled, real pearls, and genuine gemstones. You won’t find plated or stainless-steel options here, as I don’t believe in using cheap materials for something that’s meant to last a lifetime.

Finally, I’ve worked hard to create a strong brand identity and a luxurious, welcoming atmosphere for every customer who walks through the door.

What is your favourite element of the community of independents in Norwich and Norfolk?

My experience has been mostly very pleasant and supportive.

I love meeting other independent business owners who are like-minded and open to sharing tips and advice — it’s such a positive community to be part of.

Why is it important to support independents?

I think it’s really important because running your own business — especially solo like myself — can be a lonely and challenging journey without someone to bounce ideas off.

I’m lucky to have supportive friends and family, but connecting with others who have ‘been there and done that’ is priceless.

For customers, supporting independents helps keep local communities thriving.

You’re supporting someone who’s working hard to build their own life, rather than contributing to a large corporation.

In return, you get a more personal experience and beautifully made products created with genuine care.

Have you got any plans for the rest of 2025 (and beyond!)?

I definitely do — and I’m very excited about them!

I’ve got plans to expand my current offerings and introduce new services too. I know that sounds vague but keep an eye on my socials for each new release — they’ll be well worth the wait!
