Evie Hair: Haircuts to Make you Feel Like the Main Character!

I don’t know about you, but sometimes a good or bad hair day can make or break my week!

Some days (especially when I have very little energy!), all I want to do is throw my hair into a messy bun and hide in an oversized hoodie.

However, you can’t beat the feeling of a good hair day – whether you’re trying a bold new hair colour, just had a fresh haircut or you’ve tried a hairstyle you saw on social media, a good hair day can give you the confidence to make you feel as if you can take on anything.

In my eyes, my hair is the finishing touch to my outfit – I can never judge an outfit until I have tackled my bed hair!

Not long ago, I caught up with Evie Wright, a hairdresser based in Holt. I spoke to Evie about her journey as a hairdresser, the beauty of the industry and how her haircuts and styles will leave you feeling confident and refreshed!

When did your journey as a Hairdresser begin (and what drew you to the industry)?

My hairdressing journey started when I was at school.

I was able to take Hair and Beauty as a B-Tec and alongside that, worked in a salon in Norwich on Saturdays. Once I had finished school, I was lucky enough to be offered an apprenticeship and from there continued my qualification up to a Level 2 City & Guilds.

I had always enjoyed doing the more practical things. When I started working in a salon on Saturdays, I really enjoyed learning new skills and meeting so many different people.

What do you enjoy most about working in the industry?

The hairdressing industry is always changing with new techniques and products so there is always something new to learn or look into – it is one of the reasons I’m so lucky to do what I do.

I also love that I get to meet and talk to so many different people and get to know each client over time.

Has your personal style/ skills developed since becoming a Hairdresser?

Becoming a hairdresser has definitely changed me as a person.

I think I shocked most of my close friends and family when I said I was thinking of becoming a hairdresser as I have always been very quiet and not overly confident.

Hairdressing pushed me way out of my comfort zone, as meeting and talking to lots of different people would have been something I avoided doing in the past, but now do daily which I am so grateful for.

What do you love most about being self-employed/ running your business (and did it feel to take that first step)?

Being self-employed is definitely one of the scariest but best steps I have taken so far in my career. It has allowed me to do things the way I had always felt they should be done and given me more freedom when it comes to allowing enough time for clients and meeting their needs. It has definitely been challenging trusting myself enough to make the decisions, but I’m incredibly lucky that I work alongside people who can guide me in the right direction.

How important are your relationships with clients?

I value my relationships with clients more than anything as although they come in for haircut/colour, I do believe it’s more than that. Being able to listen to what they have to say and build that trust, so everyone feels comfortable and relaxed is so important in my opinion.

What impact do you believe a new haircut/ style can have on someone (confidence, etc)?

I do really believe having a new haircut/colour (or even just a blow-dry!) can make such a difference to how you feel about yourself. It’s yet another reason I enjoy what I do, as we are able to make a difference to someone’s day even if it’s only small.

I also feel very lucky that we get to see people through all sorts of different life situations - everything from breakups to weddings and even funerals.

What is the hardest lesson you’ve learnt since entering the industry?

The hardest lesson I have learnt since joining the industry is probably trusting/believing in myself enough to branch off to start doing things the way I see they should be done. It was also difficult to find a salon where I feel comfortable and where I feel like I can give my clients the best experience.

How important is development/ continuous learning to your job?

I think it’s very important to keep developing and learning new skills as the industry and products are always changing. Whether it’s a new technique or a new product, it’s important to me to keep up to date so I can provide my clients with the latest services and products.

What do you hope to achieve this year?

I hope to keep building my clientele, meeting lots of new clients and trying some very interesting courses!
