Discovering the Inspirational Journey of Lucy Wright

Electric blue, pastel pink or olive green? Delicate spots or daring stripes? Bright patterns or minimalist designs? There is a design for everyone when getting your nails done!

I don’t know about you, but I always want my set of nails to reflect my month ahead – whether this be a patterned set for a holiday, bright colours for a busy few weeks or delicate designs for a professional focus.

Not only does getting my nails done provide me with time away from the stress of everyday life, but a fresh set makes me feel ready to take on the world (who else can’t stop looking at their nails after getting a new design!).

I recently visited Lucy Wright, a Beauty Therapist based at Rovella Hair & Co, to treat myself (and my tired-looking nails!) to a fresh set.

Lucy’s passion, energy and love for the industry was evident as soon as I sat down with her. Not only did she go into detail about how each colour would show up on my design (to help my indecisive brain!), but she made the whole experience so inviting with her knowledge and conversation.

Lucy also specialises in pedicures, lash lifts, brow laminations, tints and waxing (to name a few!) – making her your go-to for your next beauty treatment.

I spoke to Lucy after visiting her to discover her journey in the beauty industry, how she believes the health and beauty industry has evolved and her plans for the future!

When did your journey as a Beauty Therapist begin?

My journey began in 2021 at Aylsham High School studying Hair and Beauty Level 1.

In 2022, I started at City College Norwich, completing my Level 2 and 3 by 2024.

Within this time, I got my head down, started my little business, got my first salon job and completed my BIAB and brow lamination qualifications.

What do you specialise in?

I would say I specialise most in BIAB on natural nails however other popular treatments are gel/varnish manicures and pedicures, facials, waxing, brow and lash treatments.

I’m also looking to soon reintroduce treatments I’ve previously trained in such as massage and Indian head massages.

How do you aim to make your customers feel after their treatments?

I always aim to make my clients feel relaxed and refreshed after their treatments.

Whether it’s a facial or waxing, my goal for every client is for them to leave feeling enriched by their treatment and appreciate their natural beauty. I want them to experience a boost of confidence and find comfort in their own skin.

How important are the relationships you create with customers?

The relationships I build with my clients truly mean the world to me.

Creating a welcoming and relaxed environment where everyone feels completely at ease is so important to me.

I love getting to know each person who sits in my chair! Having a chat, sharing laughs and making sure they feel confident and looked after from start to finish is essential.

Seeing my clients leave happy, feeling good and loving their new nails or lashes honestly makes everything I do so worthwhile - it’s one of the most rewarding parts of my job.

What do you love most about the health and beauty industry?

What I love most about the health and beauty industry is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a person’s confidence and well-being.

Starting out as a complete stranger can feel very daunting, but I try my absolute best to make my clients feel comfortable.

Also, I love how there will always be new designs or products coming and going, it never gets boring!!

Lastly you can improve your skills, knowledge and always keep working towards further personal growth.

What makes your business unique?

I believe what makes my business unique is my passion to make everyone feel comfortable.

I really treasure the rapport made with my clients; I will be the first to admit their next appointment can’t come round fast enough!

I believe my clients have made such a positive impact on my business and how I run it.

How does it feel to be part of the incredible team at Rovella Hair and Co?

Although I only joined Rovella Hair & Co late July 2025, the incredible support, kindness and encouragement from the girls have made me feel like I’ve been part of the team for years.

I’m so grateful to be surrounded by such a welcoming and talented team.

What challenges have you faced in your journey as a Beauty Therapist (and how have you overcome these)?

One of my biggest challenges has been my confidence.

It can be a very disheartening industry at times; you can post a set of nails you’re genuinely proud of only to see a similar set done by someone else and immediately feel like yours doesn’t compare.

Over the past few months, I’ve grown so much, both in my work and in my mindset.

I’ve come to realise that everyone’s style is different and everyone brings something unique.

As long as I know I’ve done my best and my client leaves happy, that’s what truly matters.

Another challenge I’ve faced is being my own boss.

Making that leap can be daunting, especially at a young age and with little knowledge about being self-employed. There were many times I questioned whether being employed would be easier and less stressful.

Nearly three years in, I can finally say that I’ve overcome the doubts and started owning my business with confidence.

While workload and work-life balance can feel like a struggle and overwhelming at times, once you find what works for you being your own boss is incredibly rewarding.

How has the health and beauty industry changed since you've been a part of it (and are there any stereotypes that impact your work)?

Since I’ve been part of the health and beauty industry, I’ve seen it grow so quickly already.

I would say one of the biggest challenges we have to face as therapists is AI creating fake designs and the increase of trends moving faster than ever.

There’s a lot more pressure to constantly create “picture perfect” work. Although this does enable you to be more creative and better your skills, it has also increased comparison and unrealistic expectations.

One stereotype that still impacts the industry is the idea that beauty work is “easy” or not a real career.

In reality it requires skill, training, time and a lot of behind-the-scenes work. Breaking that stereotype and being recognised as a professional is something I’m really proud to be a part of.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to join the industry?

If there’s one piece of advice I would give to anyone wanting to get into this industry is do not give up and practice until your arm feels like it’s going to fall off!

Any spare time you get, keep practicing your French tips and your application, it will get better! Even the best professionals struggle and will have a bad French tip day, we are all human.

However, it is so important to not give up before you have realised how much you are capable of. If I’m honest, I really struggled with designs until about a year ago. The more clients you have sat in your chair pushing you to get out of your comfort zone and try something different, the more confident you will feel!

Do you have any goals for 2026?

In 2026 I’m certainly looking to better my skills and offer some new treatments.

I’m looking to get back into massage as soon as possible, as even just talking about it has already been such a hit with my regulars!

I’m also looking forward to training in specialised high-quality facials and using more Neals Yard products.

I’m also excited to train in other treatments such as hard gel and lash extensions.

I’m super excited for 2026 and can’t wait to see what opportunities it has to offer!
